Normally when you start a game, you progress through a series of maps in the game type that was selected in the UT2003 menu. MapMixer allows you to use map lists made up of any game types - you can then choose to switch to each game type during the course of a map list. MapMixer supports two ways of doing this with either user created Custom Map Lists or automatically generated map lists using the selected game types.
The options for Game Type switching are found in the Setup Configuration section.
To utilise Game Type Switching you must create a set of rules that can be used when switching game types.
When you create a map list using the enhanced Map List Editor, MapMixer not only records the names of the maps you add but also the game types that the maps were added from. After selecting Custom Map List as the map list source for MapMixer, you will have the option to enable Game Type Switching. Then all you need do is select your Game Type Rules List (which you created) and MapMixer will progress through the map list, changing game types as required. If you don't enable Game Type Switching with a Custom Map List then the game type that the session was started with will continue until the end. Thus you can choose to play CTF maps in Death Match or switch game types instead.
When you select All Maps of Game Type(s) for the Map List Source in the Setup Configuration, MapMixer will automatically create a map list that is based upon all the maps installed for the game type that is chosen in the UT menu. This means that if you start a session with a Death Match map then the entire list of DeathMatch maps will be loaded as the current map list. However, if you enable the Game Type Switching option then something different happens. In this case MapMixer will look at the current Game Rules List that is selected and add every map that is compatible for each game type into the map list. So this means that if you have a Game Rules List selected that contains, for example, two game types - Capture The Flag and Domination, then all maps for both these game types will be added to the current map list.
Note that there could be a small delay when loading the first map, as this is when MapMixer is constructing the map list. However, this delay may not even be noticeable!
The All Maps of Game Type(s) source also provides two extra options, when Game Type Switching is enabled: Sequence and Type Limit. The first option determines how many maps will be chosen in a sequence before changing game types. This means that a Sequence value of one will force a game type change for each map, whereas a value of four will mean that a new game type will only be chosen after four maps of a particular game type.
The second option Type Limit is non-descriptive way of saying that a maximum number of maps will be chosen for each game type in the map list. The Death Match game type is most likely going to have far more maps than any other standard game type and the Type Limit option allows you to limit the number of maps chosen for each game type. Another example is the "Greed" game type, which can pretty much use any standard game type map, so if you included the Greed game type in the Game Rules List then you'd end up with an enormous amount of Greed matches in your map list. The Type Limit option enables you to keep your MapMixer created map list under some control.
It might sounds complicated but it all comes back to the Map List Source that you select and only those controls relevant for that source will be made visible.
The important thing to remember is that for Game Type Switching to occur successfully, you must have a Game Rules List appropriate for your Map List Source Type.
